Radiotherapy: technical aspects

چکیده
Abstract Radiotherapy is an important cancer treatment: in patients who are cured of cancer, radiotherapy contributes to cure around 40% cases. also has role improving symptoms individuals with incurable cancer. Whereas palliative typically given over 1–10 treatments, radical treatments can extend 4–8 weeks. Radiation often delivered externally by machines called linear accelerators. It be using brachytherapy, where radioactive implants placed or close a tumour, systemic isotopes, which swallowed injected and then locate destroy cells. Modern imaging, computing delivery systems have led dramatic improvements radiotherapy. Treatment aims accurately precisely deliver high radiation doses tumour tissue minimize the received surrounding normal tissues. Image-guided increases accuracy evaluating motion position during treatment. Stereotactic delivers very small number used for intra- extracranial lesions. Recent developments, including magnetic resonance imaging-based treatment adaptive planning, aim further improve precision, ultimate increasing reducing toxicity.

Radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer—technical aspects and alternate fractionation
Early laryngeal, especially glottic, cancer is a good candidate for radiotherapy because obvious early symptoms (e.g. hoarseness) make earlier treatment possible and with highly successful localized control. This type of cancer is also a good model for exploring the basic principles of radiation oncology and several key findings (e.g. dose, fractionation, field size, patient fixation, and overa...
متن کاملImmunological aspects of radiotherapy
The major objective of radiotherapy (RT) in the context of cancer treatment is the achievement of local tumor control. Traditionally, this is considered to be mediated by the induction of DNA damage, resulting in tumor cell death and abrogated clonogenic survival [1]. However, it has become more and more evident that distinct irradiation regimes as well as selected doses of ionizing radiation, ...
متن کاملTumour ablation: technical aspects
Image-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive, relatively low-risk procedure for tumour treatment. Local recurrence and survival rates depend on the rate of complete ablation of the entire tumour including a sufficient margin of surrounding healthy tissue. Currently a variety of different RFA devices are available. The interventionalist must be able to predict ...
متن کاملTotal mesorectal excision: technical aspects.
Total mesorectal excision (TME) is a precise dissection of the rectum and all pararectal lymph nodes within an oncologic package: the mesorectal envelope. This article is a brief description of the technical aspects of the dissection, illustrated by cadaver dissection. Here the TME dissection is organized into 6 steps to facilitate learning: (1) left retroperitoneum; (2) superior rectal and inf...
